In broadcast systems, the adoption of UHDTV (Ultra-High-Definition Television) or 4K/8K content has created a need to transport signals with a bit rate as high as 12 Gbps. UHDTV using a 12G-SDI interface, in its native or uncompressed form, operates at approximately 11.88 Gbps (commonly referenced as 12 Gbps for simplicity). Unlike its predecessor 3G-SDI/HD-SDI, 12G-SDI has a significantly shorter transmission range over coaxial cable—typically limited to around 30 meters (depending on cable quality and signal conditions). For distances beyond 30 meters, fiber optic cable remains the sole viable solution to maintain signal integrity and support long-range high-bandwidth transmission.

VOSCOM’s Broadcast Fiber System, 12G-SDI Fiber Extenders provide for the digital transmission of fully uncompressed SDI (270 Mbps), HD-SDI (1.485 Gbps), 3G-SDI (2.97 Gbps), or 12G-SDI (11.88 Gbps) 4K/8K UHD video over fiber. Our Broadcast Fiber System is an excellent choice for transporting SMPTE-2081 (12G-SDI), SMPTE-424M (3G-SDI), SMPTE-292M (HD-SDI), SMPTE-259M (SDI), and DVB-ASI compliant video signals over long or short distances with one single-mode fiber.

In addition to supporting the latest 12G-SDI standard for 4K60 4:2:2 and 8K30 transmission, the system also integrates:
• Balanced audio, Unbalanced audio, and embedded audio extraction
• Bidirectional RS422/RS485/RS232 serial data for device control
• Loop-through outputs for signal distribution
• Contact closure for remote triggering
• Gigabit Ethernet (1000Base-T) for IP-based data
• Optional features including GENLOCK, Time Code, return video paths,  intercom systems, and tally indicators.

For applications requiring long-distance transmission of 4K/8K UHD signals, fiber optic transmission ensures zero signal degradation, immunity to electromagnetic interference (EMI/RFI), and minimal latency. The system’s plug-and-play design eliminates the need for optical adjustments or signal tuning, while LED indicators provide real-time monitoring of signal status, link integrity, and power conditions.
